In the pine forest outside Harads, Sweden, Treehotel has nine treehouses, and no two are alike. Each was designed by a different architect as a separate answer to the same question: how should a room live in a forest?

Kent and Britta Lindvall founded Treehotel in 2010. The rooms are the reason people come, and they're worth getting to know by name before you choose one.

Nine treehouses create nine different ways of moving from the forest floor into the canopy.

Choosing your treehouse

Some rooms try to disappear. The Mirrorcube, by Tham & Videgård, reflects the trees, sky, and snow across its outer walls. The Bird's Nest, by Bertil Harström, looks like an enormous nest from outside and opens into a more conventional room inside.

Others make no attempt to blend in. Harström's UFO is a silver saucer you reach by ladder. The Blue Cone, by Thomas Sandell, is actually red. He changed the color after seeing how it stood out against the snow, and the name stayed.

Then there are the rooms built around the view. The Cabin reaches out from the hillside toward the Lule River Valley, and Dragonfly brings the valley in through wide windows. The 7th Room has transparent floor sections that show the forest ten meters below. Biosphere, by Bjarke Ingels Group, is wrapped in 350 birdhouses. Oasis, new in 2026 from Per Nadén and Mattias Lind, uses curved walls to narrow the view and has its own sauna, hot tub, and outdoor area.

Why go in winter

Getting to your room is part of the design. The Cabin and Biosphere are reached by bridges, so the room comes into view slowly as you walk toward it. The Bird's Nest and UFO are reached by ladder, so you're looking straight up at them before you climb.

In winter, with bridges, ramps, and ladders standing out against the snow, you see that design more clearly than at any other time of year.
