Four miles from Rhayader, in the heart of Mid Wales, Lon Lodges sits within working farmland at the edge of the Cambrian Mountains. Sheep outnumber people here, and after sunset the darkness is the main event.
Owner-operator Kerena Pugh's property began as a diversification project on a family sheep farm. Two traditional lodges were built in 2007, and in 2018 the Stellar Safari Lodge was added, a luxury glamping structure set apart on its own section of land. The farm stays active, with about 1,000 sheep moving across the acreage and mapped trails that cross open fields.
The lodge
Stellar Safari Lodge accommodates up to six and was designed to feel remote without giving up comfort. A large wood-burning stove anchors the interior and handles both heating and cooking, solar panels power the lighting, and outside a wood-fired hot tub and sauna extend the experience into the landscape. The structure sits mostly off-grid but keeps essential modern touches, including a flushing toilet.
The Cambrian Mountains after dark
The Cambrian Mountains are among the darkest areas in the United Kingdom. Working with local guide Dafydd Wyn Morgan, who co-founded the Cambrian Mountains Astro Trail, Lon Lodges offers guided stargazing walks, astrophotography workshops, and astro-cycling, with equipment available for those without cameras. A signature 60-minute star bathing session gathers guests outdoors while a compact smart telescope captures deep-space objects overhead. On clear nights the Milky Way is visible without interference.
