Plainscraft Covered Wagon

PlainsCraft Covered Wagons began with a travel experience that sparked an idea.

After building a thriving electronics manufacturing company and eventually selling the business as he approached retirement, Founder, Dennis and his wife Donna began spending more time traveling and exploring the growing world of glamping. During one of their early stays, they booked an accommodation experience with a "soft canvas top". The concept was memorable, an overnight stay that connected guests with a more modern hotel feel, but still provided an outdoor experience with the sounds and smells of nature that glamping provides.

But like many canvas-covered structures, the unit struggled to maintain consistent comfort. Temperature swings and minimal insulation made it difficult to balance the immersive outdoor experience with the level of comfort modern guests expect in the colder evening temps.

Dennis’s curiosity, paired with an instinct for problem-solving, led him to explore how thoughtful engineering could help regulate interior temperatures.

With a background in manufacturing and product design, he began studying the structures used across the glamping industry. At the same time, he was reminded of a childhood memory, riding a covered wagon he, his sister and friend pulled through the streets of their small Kansas town.

That blend of nostalgia and practical engineering sparked an idea.

In 2018, PlainsCraft was launched with a specific goal: to re-engineer the traditional wagon silhouette into a fully functional hospitality structure that could deliver reliable interior temperature comfort while still offering the immersive feel of canvas lodging.

Today, the Pioneer Elite models include full en-suite bathrooms with showers integrated directly within the wagon footprint, eliminating the need for detached facilities while delivering the privacy and convenience guests increasingly expect.

Today’s travelers expect more than novelty. They want comfort, privacy, and reliability alongside a distinctive setting.

PlainsCraft keeps the traditional wagon silhouette intact while ensuring the interior meets modern expectations. Each unit includes climate control, integrated systems, and layouts designed for practical, everyday use.

PlainsCraft units are manufactured in Kansas, with hand-stained wood planks, and components assembled in-house. From the outside, the structure feels historic. Inside, it functions like a well-appointed guest suite. The result is simple: a recognizable form that delivers a comfortable, dependable stay.
