Ten canvas suites perched on granite boulders above the Southern Namib. If you've ever wondered what the great expedition camps of the 1920s might have looked like if they'd had plunge pools, this is it.
Arnaud Zannier built Sonop on one of the most theatrical settings in glamping: a natural boulder field with panoramic views across hundreds of miles of desert. The camp is deliberately isolated, and the arrival itself is part of the point.
What the stay is actually like
Each tent sits on its own elevated deck between granite outcrops, connected to the main camp by wooden walkways. Canvas walls, dark timber framing, vintage brass fittings, antique furniture, a private terrace, and views that go on for what feels like forever. Inside, a claw-foot bathtub sits by a window looking out at the desert.
Meals are served in canvas-covered dining spaces, and there's an infinity pool cut into the rock. Days move between guided drives, horseback rides across the plains, e-bike routes, and long stretches of doing very little except watching the light change on the mountains.
Nights are the real reason to come. Namibia has some of the darkest skies on earth, and Sonop leans into it with a resident astronomer, telescopes, and dedicated stargazing decks. The Milky Way rises so brightly it casts a shadow.
Getting there and when to go
Sonop is in the Karas region of southern Namibia, about 40 miles from the town of Karasburg. Most guests fly into Windhoek (Namibia's capital) and connect on a light aircraft charter to the camp's private airstrip, which takes about two hours. Driving is possible but takes eight hours from Windhoek on mostly gravel roads.
The camp operates year-round. April through October is the dry season, with cool mornings, sunny days, and the clearest night skies. November through March brings warmer weather and occasional dramatic storms across the desert. Winter nights get cold; you'll want warm layers regardless of when you go.
